Brandy saucepans first made an appearance during the reign of Queen Anne so this is a very early example. Good size and lovely hammered finish with good patina. Weight 332 grams, 10.6 troy ounces.
Diameter 9 cms (top), 11 cms (max). In 1696, so extensive had become the melting and clipping of coinage that the silversmiths were forbidden to use the sterling standard for their wares, but had to use a new higher standard, 95.8 per cent. New hallmarks were ordered, "the figure of a woman commonly called Britannia" and the lion's head erased (torn off at the neck) replacing the lion passant and the leopard's head crowned. This continued until the old standard of 92.5 per cent was restored in 1720. Britannia standard silver still continues to be produced even today.
This useful warming pan is in very good condition. It is stamped with a full set of English silver hallmarks. The handle has a crack underneath, where it's very simply shaped and is possibly an old replacement, but equally, some early panhandles were very crudely shaped. Please also note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Waxantiques is a family business run by husband and wife team Lou and Ann Wax. Our shared interest in antiques led us to change career and start dealing in general antiques shortly after we married. As the years progressed our interest became more focused on antique silverware and its domestic history and twenty five years ago we moved on to Camden Passage to open our specialist silver store waxantiques. In 2018 we finally made our move to the London Silver Vaults. Our store launched in 2011 now accounts for a substantial and growing proportion of the business to the extent where Ann needs to concentrate on maintaining our online presence, while Lou is responsible for the day to day running of the shop and customer liaison. We are fortunate indeed to have a career which allows us to handle such lovely items, many of which would not be out of place in a museum environment. Perhaps best of all is that it keeps us in contact with customers from all over the world, many of whom we count as good friends as well as colleagues. Welcome to our shop in the London Silver Vaults. Our showcase of Fine Silver and Works of Art, handcrafted by silversmiths from the 1600s onwards, includes beautiful and rare collectors pieces and luxury Antique Table Silver to be used and enjoyed.
